29th of May at 1.30pm to 5.00pm we are going to celebrate our 3 years’ anniversary as well as the Dragon Boat Festival. Cook in Shanghai will celebrate our new venue in Pudong as well as our third year in this business. Do you want to have fun making zongzi, learn about the history of the Dragon Boat festival, drink some festival tea and meet many old and new friends?

qu yuanThe traditional Chinese holiday known as the Dragon Boat festival is held on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. The festival revolves around eating zongzi, drinking realgar wine and racing dragon boats. The story of the Dragon boat festival celebrates the poet and minister of the ancient state of Chu who had foresight to see that the state of Qin was a bad alliance for his state. His suicide following the capture of the Chu capital Ying was seen as tragic by the local people who admired him.

The people raced out in their boats to try to save him or at least recover the body, but the body could not be found. Balls of sticky rice were dropped into the water so that the fish would not eat his body and this is said to be the origin of the zongzi. At the same time realgar wine was poured into the river which made an aquatic dragon rise from the river which the boatmen promptly killed.

We have been teaching home-style cooking, as well as adding new and exciting courses for some time now, and hope that we will have many more years of business ahead of us. Our anniversary brings a festive afternoon, learning, tasting, eating, drinking, socializing and making new friends! We hope to see you there!
