The Lantern Festival Activity - Shanghai

The fifteenth day of the first lunar month is the Lantern Festival. On that day, family members gather to have a brilliant night, so ancient people also call it Shangyuan Festival, Yuan night or festival of light.

According to the Chinese tradition, at the very beginning of a new year, when there is a bright full moon hanging in the sky, there should be thousands of colorful lanterns hung out for people to appreciate.

Yuanxiao, also called tangyuan, is a dumpling ball made of sticky rice flour stuffed with different fillings, And the lanterns’ artwork vividly demonstrates traditional Chinese images, such as fruits, flowers, birds, animals, people, and buildings.
